Chithirai Thiruvilla |
The first month of Tamil Nadu's traditional Tamil calendar is called Chithirai. The Dharmapathi Sri Etteluthu Perumal temple celebrates this month as a magnificent festival because it has great significance. Devotees will fast for 18 days starting on Chithirai 1 (April 14), which is observed as the Tamil New Year. Volunteers will visit surrounding homes around this time to collect cash or grains that residents may offer as "Dharmam." We use these dharmam to distribute food as Annadharmam to all people equally on May 1st, which is also known as Thiruvilla (Chithirai 18). The major goal of this festival is to pray for everyone in the globe to have access to enough food as well as for blessings of prosperity and good health. The dates for this festival's three-day celebration are set for April 29 to May 1, 2023. |
